The text was written by Andrew Marlton, an award winning Australian political cartoonist. The context of the cartoon is simple, it was written days after NASA discovered water on Mars.
The intended audience of the text is men and women between the ages 15-35. This is because it explains a serious topic, which is very complicated in a humorous way. A young audience may be much more attached to learning with humor and “fun” than with an article that just talks about straightforward facts.
The Text is a comic, a cartoon; It uses exaggeration, and “silly” characters, like the dogs, to talk about a serious issue. The comic begins by showing a headline, which describes this issue. Below it, there are two dogs who are confused by watching Mars closely (mars has a blue dot which represents the water). There is an arrow pointing towards Mars, which specifies its Mars, that is more proof of the intended audience. The handwriting is messy, which could be to emphasise that it is being said by dogs, who can’t right, but if they could, it would not be with an adequate calligraphy.
The next drawing shown in the text portrays two “martians”, as the arrow states, looking at the Mars rover which was sent in my NASA. The arrows also point to the martians as a “possible racist stereotype”. This once again contributes to the humorous perspective since the author is making the intended reader imagine a racist martian. On top of every cartoon, there is a text written in black which shows the context of each drawing. The Martians represent humans on Earth, which are racist, and hesitate on talking to other races as they have “cooties”, this is a criticism of society, showing how we only care about financial gain and not about helping others. The drawing that follows shows two “scientist” dogs, who are wearing lab coats, looking at a machine which is called “Super-Duper Space -o- Scope”. The context of this drawing shown on top of the cartoon is talking about a large body of water, one of the dogs says, “you won’t believe this”, and the other dog which is wearing snorkeling equipment. This also produces humor on the audience. It is essential to know that dogs make up a large part of social media nowadays, attracting a young audience.
